I’ve been shooting Nikons for years, but really wasn’t impressed with video quality. I have a D850 and didn’t even bother to try the video mode…. it’s like the switch for video was cemented (just kidding:)
I’m full time director of photography. I edit a lot of the footage I shoot too, so I’ve got a good idea about the image quality of many cinema cameras like Red and Alexa, but also of the Sony and Panasonic mirrorless.
That secret camera, Nikon Z6, happen to be pretty nice for video. It competes well with it’s sony and pana counterparts with an added bonus – 10bit output from a full frame sensor. I’ve tried a sample camera for a short time, with some firmware bugs and burned out pixels, but it looks really promising. I like the new Nikon!

In their latest video, Tony and Chelsea Northrup posted their first impressions using the Nikon Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras.
The Z6 and Z7 were supposed to be mirrorless versions of the Nikon D850 and the D750. From the review of the Nikon Z they say – in a nutshell, it’s NOT a mirrorless D850! Physically, both cameras physically look identical and weigh the same. However, Nikon is clearly targeting the Z6 and Z7 at different audiences, like Sony does with the A7 and A7R line-ups. We can say the Z 7 is the mirrorless equivalent to the D850, the Z 6 is more like a D750.
The Nikon Z6 is targeted as a general-purpose mirrorless camera. It comes with 24 MP sensor, 12 fps continuous shooting speed and 273 autofocus points. According to latest rumors, the names of the upcoming Nikon full frame mirrorless cameras are now confirmed. There will be two models and will be called as Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7.
Accordingly, the Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera will be a 24MP resolution model with high speed and low light performance . The Nikon Z7 will have the same high-resolution full-frame sensor as the D850 and come with 45MP resolution .
Along with Nikon Z6 and Z7 full frame mirrorless cameras, the company will also hear three new Z-mount lenses. These include the standard zoom Z-NIKKOR 24-70mm f/4 lens, the Z-NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8 lens for portraits and a wide-angle lens (24mm f/1.8 or 28mm f/1.8 or 35mm f/1.8).
Nikon will also announce a new high-end prime lens: Z-NOCT-NIKKOR 58mm f/0.95 lens. This lens is the first NOCT lens from Nikon. The announcement date for this lens could be along with Nikon Z6 & Z7 on August 23rd or a later date. … Continue reading
